-Introduction:

Leather tanning is considered to be of the oldest crafts in the world. It developed to be, at present, one of the important industries based on science, chemistry and scientific research, and depending on technical, mechanical and electronic development which took part in the advancement of this industry and in lowering of production cost. Further, the use of new chemicals has participated in the sturdily of the product an, gave it a beautiful luster and produced new kinds of leather that were not produced before which became wide spread and won the satisfaction and the admiration of the consumer.

The passing need for the leather owing to its use in many industries (shoes and clothes), and the availability of the raw materials necessary for the industry (hide of the Syrian Awas), has called on the Government to take interest in the establishing modern tanneries in our country.

Considering that Italy is the most developed and interested country in this industry, contracts were concluded contracts with the most famous Italian companies for establishing a modern tannery equipped with the famous machines for the production of the best leather in Syria (Turkish and French machines were added) and the tannery is provided with a laboratory, and experimental tannery and a staff of chemists (trained in Italy). These machines were renewed several times and electronic machines were added for spraying and measuring the leather, and the other machines to finish the leather up to the last stages and in several colours and kinds that win the satisfaction and meet the taste of the consumers.

- Arab Company for Rubber, Plastic and Leather Products in Aleppo:

It is one of the Public Sector companies that depend of the General Organization for the Chemical Industries and the Ministry of the Industry in Syria. The Head office of the company is situated in the factory of the Modern Tannery in Aleppo. It includes two factories:

1- The tannery factory in Aleppo which produces the half-made and finished sheep skins, goat skins, cow hides, and the Sole Leather.

2- The rubber and plastic factory which produces the rubber spare parts of all kinds and sizes, the cylinders, car floor covers, plastic shoes, heels and soles.
